Darline Graham Secures South Carolina Senate Runoff Victory with Trump's Backing

A prominent family name and a coveted endorsement from former President Donald Trump proved instrumental in securing an unexpected victory for Darline Graham in South Carolina's latest runoff election.

Graham, a Republican, triumphed over Rep. Ralph Norman, also a Republican, in a closely watched contest to become the GOP nominee for the Senate. Her candidacy follows the sudden passing of her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, in July.

Just over a month after her brother's death at age 71, South Carolina voters opted for the familiar Graham name. Despite having limited political experience prior to her appointment to complete her brother's unexpired term, Darline Graham garnered the crucial backing of former President Trump.

Runoff Victory and Family Legacy

While her initial appointment by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster was widely considered temporary, Trump actively encouraged her to seek election beyond the remaining five months of her brother's term.

"Darline is somebody I've known for a long time," Trump stated during a rally for her in Myrtle Beach recently. "I asked her to do this. I said, ‘Darline, you got to do it,’ because everyone loves her. Everyone respects her."
"So I've known her through Lindsey — I've known her for so long," he continued. "I think Lindsey respected Darline more than any other person he knows, including me."

Presidential Endorsement and Campaign Support

Trump also provided last-minute financial assistance to bolster her campaign. This support came after a moment during her final debate with Norman where she acknowledged having limited awareness of the strategic importance of Taiwan.

Campaign finance records indicate that MAGA Inc., a political action committee linked to Trump with an estimated $400 million war chest, contributed over $800,000 to a phone campaign in support of Graham over the weekend. This substantial sum was deployed despite the PAC largely remaining untapped during this election cycle, even as several Senate races across the country have seen shifts in power dynamics.

Policy Stance and Legislative Claims

Graham has cultivated a political persona distinct from her late brother, emphasizing a greater focus on domestic policy issues rather than foreign affairs. However, through debates and her concise campaign period, she consistently made it clear that casting a vote for her was a vote for the former president's agenda.

She criticized Norman for occasionally disagreeing with House Republican leadership and, at times, with Trump himself, asserting, "We already have enough problem Democrats, we don’t need a problem Republican."

Despite her brief tenure in the Senate, Graham argued to voters that her accomplishments surpassed those of Norman's entire congressional career. She highlighted her role in the passage of the long-anticipated bipartisan Russia sanctions package, a measure initially championed by her brother but which had faced delays from the White House.

"I was in Washington for only two weeks before I passed the Russia and Iran Sanctions Act through the Senate," Graham stated. "I then passed the deciding vote to confirm President Trump's attorney general, Todd Blanche."
"Simply put, I've done more in 20 days than Ralph Norman has done in 20 years."

Concession and Call for Unity

Following his loss on Tuesday, Norman indicated he would extend his support to Graham and planned to call her to offer his congratulations.

"As I said earlier, I'm going to support the Republican. I'm not supporting a Democrat. So, I will support her – Darline – as best I can," Norman affirmed during his concession speech Tuesday evening.
