American Airlines Flight Diverted After Passenger Allegedly Restrained With Duct Tape Following Racist, Homophobic Outburst

An American Airlines flight en route from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark, New Jersey, was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Baltimore late Thursday night after a passenger reportedly became disruptive and was ultimately restrained with duct tape and zip ties.

The incident involved an unidentified individual whose behavior, according to witnesses, posed a risk to others on board, leading to the diversion of the aircraft.

Mid-Flight Disturbance Leads to Diversion

Reports indicate the passenger allegedly began shouting racial and homophobic slurs during the mid-flight disturbance. Footage from the incident captured crew members and other passengers working to secure the man to his seat as he reportedly resisted. Photographs show the individual firmly secured with duct tape and zip ties, including his head to the seatback.

The situation reportedly escalated approximately two hours into the journey when the man began yelling at another male passenger seated beside him. According to accounts, his shouts included references to religious themes and damnation, prompting a flight attendant to intervene in an attempt to de-escalate the confrontation.

During this interaction, the man allegedly directed a racial slur toward the Black flight attendant and continued with anti-gay remarks. The situation further deteriorated when the individual reportedly became violent, striking the passenger seated next to him.

A female passenger attempted to assist, but the man reportedly pushed her. This action prompted three other male passengers to step in to help manage the situation.

Passengers and Crew Act to Secure Individual

Juan Mejia, a retired law enforcement officer who was one of the passengers who intervened, recounted the sudden change in atmosphere to CBS Texas. "Just like a light switch, all of a sudden, it went from quiet to yelling and chaos," Mejia stated. He further described witnessing the man assaulting the passenger in the aisle seat, with his hands around the victim's neck.

Flight attendants provided duct tape and zip ties to the three male passengers, who then worked together to restrain the unruly individual to his seat. They held him down as he reportedly struggled to break free from the restraints.

Law Enforcement Responds to Incident

American Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the flight was diverted to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel took the disruptive passenger into custody.

In a statement regarding the event, American Airlines emphasized its commitment to passenger and staff safety. "The safety and security of our customers and team members is our top priority and we do not tolerate violence," the statement affirmed. "We thank our team members for their professionalism and our customers for their understanding."

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that the Maryland Transportation Police arrested and processed the man on state charges. An FBI spokesperson told CBS Texas that the agency is "currently conducting interviews to gather the facts and will consult with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland to determine if federal charges will be filed."
