Commissioner Cathy Engelbert released a statement condemning 'hate' following public comments from Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas, who was recently suspended for an on-court altercation.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert released a statement late Tuesday evening, addressing public commentary and criticism that followed a recent on-court incident and subsequent player suspension. The statement came hours after Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas publicly voiced her dissatisfaction with the league's communication and support.
League Commissioner Responds to Player Criticism
Commissioner Engelbert's statement emphasized the league's stance against negative sentiment. "The WNBA vehemently condemns any and all forms of hate," Engelbert stated on Tuesday, adding, "The safety and well-being of everyone in our community is always the league's top priority. We are aware of Alyssa Thomas' comments, and what she and her teammates have experienced is completely unacceptable and not representative of the WNBA community. The league and our security team have been in contact with the Phoenix Mercury organization and remain committed to protecting all players."
This league response followed Thomas's remarks during a media availability session earlier that day. Thomas had been at the center of recent discussions after receiving a suspension for an interaction during a game involving Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark.
On-Court Incident Leads to Suspension
The incident in question occurred during a loose-ball play where Thomas made contact with Clark's throat using her fist. While the play was not called a foul by officials on the court at the time, the league office later reviewed the action. The play was subsequently upgraded to a Flagrant 2 foul, and Thomas was issued a one-game suspension for what was deemed a "non-basketball act."
Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White publicly commented on the initial lack of a call, describing it as "absolutely unacceptable." Following the incident, Clark was observed leaving the game due to a back injury.
Player's Account and League's Response
In her comments to the media, Thomas conveyed a lack of awareness regarding the severity of the play at the moment it happened. She stated, "A lot of us, myself included, didn't even know the play took place until after the game." Thomas also expressed concerns about how her team was being perceived, mentioning that they were being "painted as thugs" and had experienced significant online harassment. Furthermore, she criticized the WNBA's process for notifying her of the disciplinary action.
Thomas specifically highlighted the timing of her notification, stating, "Honestly, I didn't even know I was being suspended until 10 minutes before it was put on social media." She also directed criticism at the commissioner, adding, "As usual, she remains silent."
Broader Concerns Over Player Safety and Discipline
The commissioner's statement and the surrounding events have reignited discussions about player safety protocols and the consistency of disciplinary actions within the WNBA. Some observers have suggested a pattern of minimizing aggressive fouls and implementing significant penalties only after considerable public pressure. The league's handling of physical play, particularly concerning its most prominent athletes, has frequently been a point of contention.
The recent sequence of events, from the on-court contact to the subsequent suspension and the commissioner's responsive statement, has brought the league's approach to player conduct and communication under scrutiny, raising questions about its priorities in managing high-profile incidents and ensuring a safe competitive environment for all players.
