Ukraine observed its 35th Independence Day on Monday, August 24, amidst persistent Russian aggression. A regional security analyst suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin is experiencing "panic" as Ukrainian forces extend their strikes deeper into Russian territory.
The anniversary, which commemorates Ukraine's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991, coincided with an increase in Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure. Security concerns were particularly high following a warning from Ukraine's Security Service regarding potential terrorist attacks leading up to the holiday period.
In a demonstration of solidarity as the conflict continues, several European leaders traveled to Kyiv to join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for Independence Day commemorations. President Zelenskyy affirmed Ukraine's desire for peace but stressed that the nation would not capitulate to Moscow's demands.
Days before the holiday, a Russian drone strike on a crowded shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, President Zelenskyy’s hometown, resulted in at least 16 fatalities and 130 injuries, as reported by The Associated Press.
President Putin has cautioned that Ukrainian attacks on Russian economic infrastructure could "open a Pandora’s box." Conversely, Kyiv asserts that deep strikes are crucial for disrupting Moscow’s logistical operations.
Among the Russian economic targets struck by Ukraine were warehouses associated with online retail giants Wildberries and Ozon.
A regional security expert, Filipetti, commented on recent developments, stating,
"They've recently been able to actually penetrate much deeper into Russian territory, including close to Moscow and St. Petersburg."
Filipetti further explained that Ukraine's battlefield achievements have prompted a reaction from Russia.
"Their success on the military front has now resulted in the Russians getting panicked and starting to attack more inside Ukraine and what they're really trying to do is weaken their will and capabilities,"Filipetti remarked, observing that President Putin tends to become "very anxious when he's put in a corner."
Describing the current Russian actions, Filipetti characterized them as
"these sorts of gasps at trying to retain some kind of control."She elaborated on the targeting of civilian areas:
"This is why he recently targeted a shopping mall inside Ukrainian territory. He is not focused on targeting military assets. He is really focused on trying to defeat the will of Ukrainians by attacking them."
Filipetti highlighted that the deliberate targeting of civilian zones heightened security risks, particularly as Ukraine commemorated its 35th Independence Day, occurring more than four years after Russia's full-scale invasion began.
International Support and Heightened Vigilance
A number of European dignitaries traveled to Kyiv for Ukraine’s Independence Day observances. These included European Council President António Costa, along with heads of state or government from Finland, Lithuania, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, and Latvia.
Filipetti noted that this high-level international participation served to underscore the unwavering global support for Ukraine.
She emphasized the significance of the occasion for Ukraine's allies:
"Independence Day is a really important moment for the allies of the Ukrainians to really show that we are not losing steam, that we continue to support their operations, to continue to support their sovereignty,"Filipetti stated. However, she also cautioned that
"anytime there's massive public gatherings, particularly to demonstrate patriotism and support for the Ukrainian state, it increases the security risk."
Ukrainian authorities issued a plea for citizens to remain vigilant, especially when using public transport, and to be wary of potential sabotage or sharing media that might inadvertently disclose military positions. They also warned of potential attacks, according to Ukrainian News.
Filipetti specifically advised,
"They should be particularly mindful about sharing any videos or photographs that could betray the locations of some of their frontline soldiers."
The Independence Day observance followed a series of deadly drone and missile exchanges. Ukrainian authorities documented at least seven fatalities resulting from Russian assaults, while Russian officials, as reported by The Associated Press, stated that a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia's Krasnodar region claimed three lives.
Strategic Stalemate and Global Implications
Filipetti analyzed Russia's overarching objective:
"The Russians really want to bleed the Ukrainians of people, equipment, and will before the Russians are bled of those same three things,"she explained. She also pointed out the lack of progress for Moscow on the ground:
"And what we've seen over the course of this year is almost no territorial gains on behalf of the Russians."
She further indicated that Russia is experiencing monthly soldier losses that surpass its recruitment capabilities, leading to a reliance on foreign combatants from nations such as North Korea and Cuba to bridge the personnel deficit.
Filipetti reminded observers of President Putin's initial miscalculation regarding the conflict:
"Remember, Putin thought that this was going to be a special military operation that was going to last a matter of weeks."
Ultimately, Filipetti underscored that Ukraine's enduring resolve serves as a robust deterrent, extending its message far beyond Moscow.
She explained the broader message conveyed by the conflict:
"It sends a message to the Russians that any invasion of sovereign territory, like their invasion of Ukraine, is going to create more consequences for them,"Filipetti asserted. She reiterated the commitment of international allies, stating,
"We are not losing steam, and we continue to support their operations, to continue to support their sovereignty."
Filipetti added that this situation also communicates a significant message to other global adversaries, including China.
She concluded by emphasizing the critical lesson for these nations:
"These adversaries of the United States really learned from how the United States handles conflicts in other theaters. It's really important that our adversaries of China, Russia, Iran, and others understand that if they invade another country unilaterally, there are going to be consequences, not rewards."
