Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith issued a warning on Thursday regarding the potential electoral drawbacks for Democrats stemming from the rising profile of far-left streamer Hasan Piker. Speaking with Politico host Dasha Burns on "The Conversation with Dasha Burns," Smith suggested that Piker's sway could harm the party beyond its progressive base, providing Republicans with ammunition against candidates who associate with him.
Smith expressed his conviction that Piker's expanding political footprint would ultimately be detrimental to Democratic prospects.
"It's a negative because I think, over the long haul, from a general populist perspective, it's going to contaminate the electorate on the left side of the aisle," Smith stated. "It's going to come back to haunt them."
Criticism and Strategic Engagement
In a related discussion, Baldassarre strongly criticized Abdul El-Sayed, a Democratic figure, labeling him a "terrorist sympathizer and an America-hating socialist." Baldassarre further asserted that El-Sayed's refusal to distance himself from "Hamas-hugging radicals like Hasan Piker" indicated his true loyalties were not with America but with "terrorist groups."
"Democrats' refusal to disavow this clown shows they either share his poisonous ideology or they're too cowardly to confront it," Baldassarre added.
El-Sayed had previously explained directly to Smith his reasoning for not disavowing Piker, who has supported his campaign and appeared alongside him.
"What I'm saying is there are 3 million people who listen to Hasan," El-Sayed articulated. "I want to offer them a pathway into an electoral movement where, rather than sit outside of the electoral system, they see a pathway around the things that they agree with that he says that I agree with and a pathway that disavows the things that I disagree with. And, so, it's important."
Smith summarized El-Sayed's approach as an effort to engage Piker's audience rather than an outright endorsement of the streamer himself.
"So, you're not thinking about him. You’re not thinking about him. You’re thinking about the 3 million people that support him, and you're trying to get those votes. That's what you're saying?" Smith inquired.
El-Sayed confirmed Smith’s interpretation, simply responding, "Exactly."
Piker's History of Controversial Statements
Piker has been the subject of controversy for several years due to his political rhetoric. This includes his 2019 assertion that "America deserved 9/11," a statement he later retracted. More recently, Piker has drawn scrutiny for remarks concerning Israel and American Jewish communities.
