A tragic incident on Monday sent beachgoers into a panic at a popular Russian Black Sea resort, after a projectile impacted a densely populated area, leading to the deaths of seven individuals, four of whom were children, and leaving dozens wounded, according to official reports. The event unfolded in the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka, situated near Gelendzhik.
Visual recordings from the scene depicted the chaos on the beach, which was filled with tourists when the strike occurred.
Conflicting Accounts Emerge
The Russian Mission in Geneva quickly attributed the "bloody attack" to a drone launched by Ukraine, asserting that Kyiv deliberately targeted civilian areas. Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev echoed this sentiment via a Telegram post, stating, "The attack targeted civilian infrastructure. Emergency and special services are working at the crash site." He further condemned the act, calling it "a targeted attack by the Kyiv regime against civilians who have no connection to the military infrastructure. This cynical and inhumane terrorist attack against children cannot be justified."
However, Andriy Kovalenko, an officer with Ukraine’s Defense Forces, offered a contrasting narrative. He contended that the fatalities resulted directly from Russian air defense systems engaging and intercepting a drone, causing fragments to fall onto the crowded beach. Kovalenko stated on Telegram, "Russian air defense shot down a drone over people lying on the beach."
Footage of the incident showed noises akin to gunfire moments before a drone impacted the beach, triggering a fiery explosion and screams from those present. The drone's trajectory appeared to alter abruptly following the sound of gunfire, veering sharply before descending onto the beach. Governor Kondratyev himself noted in earlier Russian assessments that some of the casualties were indeed attributed to "falling drone debris."
Strategic Context and Accusations
In a separate statement on Telegram, Kovalenko elaborated on Ukraine's strategic approach, explaining that its military targets Russian industrial and military infrastructure. This strategy aims to diminish Moscow’s capacity to fund the ongoing conflict. He also leveled accusations against Russian President Vladimir Putin, alleging that Putin fostered a false sense of security for the Russian populace. Kovalenko claimed this was achieved by minimizing the significance of frequent explosions, characterizing them merely as falling debris, restricting public air raid alerts, and strategically placing air defense systems in close proximity to civilian areas, including popular Black Sea resorts.
"Putin deliberately killed these people. Because if he had not started the war and struck Ukraine, they would be alive," Kovalenko asserted. "It was Putin, his air defense, who killed these Russians. His decisions in response to their decisions launched a chain of death for Russians."
