Prince Harry's Security Dispute Casts Shadow Over Anticipated Reunion with King Charles
Concerns over official police protection for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly jeopardizing their upcoming visit to the UK and a potential family reunion.

A planned visit by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the United Kingdom is reportedly encountering difficulties amidst circulating reports that the trip could be curtailed or canceled due to security concerns. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expected to return to Britain this month, which would mark the first time their children, Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie, have been in the UK in four years.
The central issue revolves around the provision of official police protection for the Sussex family. Prince Harry has been advocating for specific accommodations within a royal estate to ensure his family's safety during their stay.
The Security Stipulations
Commentator Nicholl noted that Prince Harry is aware he does not automatically qualify for taxpayer-funded police protection during his visits to the UK. She explained that the upcoming trip has been in preparation for several months, with King Charles having been informed.
"The king was very happy to put Harry and Meghan and the children up in a royal residence where, by the way, they would have had full taxpayer police protection round the clock while they were a royal residence ... Where they don't get that taxpayer protection is if they're traveling around the country and Harry doing his Invictus Games."
Nicholl further highlighted that Prince Harry, a man of significant personal wealth, chose to step down from his role as a working member of the royal family. She emphasized that the palace has made considerable efforts to accommodate the Sussexes, stating they were "really going above and beyond."
Ongoing Disputes and Legal Challenges
Reports indicate that the Duke and Duchess were informed an official review of their security request was scheduled for March. However, they later learned that the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) had not conducted this assessment, according to reports.
In December, Prince Harry reportedly sent a private letter to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, requesting a comprehensive security risk assessment. This would be the first reevaluation of threat levels for him since 2020.
Last year, Prince Harry attended a two-day hearing to appeal the UK government’s decision to remove his automatic police protection. During court proceedings, Harry's legal team asserted that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex "felt forced to step back from the role of full-time official working members of the royal family as they were considered they were not being protected by the institution." They added that Harry had "wished to continue their duties in support of the late queen as privately funded members of the royal family."
In May 2025, the Court of Appeal unanimously ruled against Prince Harry's appeal, concluding that a committee had not treated him unfairly by deciding to review his protection on a case-by-case basis for each visit to the UK.
Archewell's Stance and Family Hopes
Earlier this week, Archewell, the couple's organization, confirmed that Prince Harry's UK itinerary includes "both public and private engagements across the country." Their statement also clarified that secure accommodations are merely "one element" of an effective protection strategy, as "risk follows the person, not the place."
Archewell's statement continued, "The independent Risk Management Board that RAVEC itself decided was necessary last November has still not taken place. It is therefore difficult to understand how the proportionality of the current arrangements can credibly be maintained without that independent assessment."
The organization added that "The Duke continues to explore every available option to enable the visit to proceed safely and to give his children the opportunity to enjoy the UK."
Nicholl observed a "genuine sense of delight" within the palace regarding the prospect of Prince Harry's return with his children. She underscored the personal aspect of the situation, noting, "You've got to remember that the king is getting older. He's living with cancer. He hasn't seen his grandchildren since the late Queens Platinum Jubilee in 2022."
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who now reside in California, departed from their roles as senior royals in 2020, citing overwhelming intrusions from the British press and a perceived lack of institutional support.
In September 2024, Buckingham Palace confirmed that Harry had spent time with King Charles at Clarence House following the King's cancer diagnosis earlier in the year. This marked their first meeting in over a year.
Nicholl concluded, "Putting aside his public position and his public role, he's just a grandfather who understandably wants to get to know his grandchildren."
