Mandan, North Dakota – A local mother has been charged with murder following the brutal stabbing deaths of two of her children. Authorities described the crime scene as exceptionally gruesome, leaving responding officers deeply affected.
Kailey Erhart, 22, is accused of fatally stabbing her 5-month-old and 3-year-old on Thursday. The incident reportedly occurred after she brandished a firearm at her estranged husband and threatened to end her own life, according to law enforcement accounts.
A third child, aged 1, sustained severe injuries during the assault but survived. This child underwent surgery, though an updated medical condition has not been publicly disclosed by police.
Tragic Events Unfold
The children's father, who was reportedly preparing to file for divorce, was present at the residence with their children when police received an alert regarding Erhart’s threats of self-harm. Earlier on the same day, Erhart allegedly threatened her husband with a newly acquired gun. He managed to disarm her after a physical struggle, dismantling the weapon and scattering its components. During this altercation, Erhart reportedly bit and scratched him.
The children's grandmother was also at the home during the fatal stabbings. She informed police that Erhart pursued her and the children's father out of the house with a knife before the alleged killings took place.
Police Response and Community Impact
Mandan Police Chief Jason Ziegler commented on the profound impact of the crime scene on his officers. “A scene like that is something that nobody should ever have to see, and the way [the officers] came through in one of the most horrific times that they’ll probably experience in their life, I’m proud,” Chief Ziegler stated during a press conference.
He further acknowledged the widespread grief caused by the event, saying, “I want to acknowledge this is an extreme, tragic and heartbreaking incident for the children involved, their families, our community and first responders who arrived on scene. Our thoughts are with everyone that were impacted.”
Legal Proceedings and Support Efforts
Erhart faces a total of nine charges, including two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and multiple counts of aggravated assault and terrorizing.
A judge set Erhart’s cash bond at $3 million, citing “the extreme violence in these alleged charges and the threat to the community, victims, and children.” Furthermore, the court issued no-contact orders, prohibiting Erhart from having any communication with the surviving victims or other family members.
Erhart’s preliminary hearing and arraignment are scheduled for October 6.
In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was established to support the children and their father. As of Sunday night, the fundraiser had garnered over $25,000. The fundraiser, organized by the father’s mother, included a poignant message: “He is a father trying to survive something no parent should ever have to face. I lost two precious souls in a devastating tragedy after they were murdered by their mother, and the pain is more than I can put into words. Every day, we are carrying unimaginable grief while also trying to stay strong for his surviving child, who is receiving ongoing medical care and facing challenges no child should ever have to endure.”
