The acclaimed actor recently shared insights into ongoing discussions regarding his involvement in the popular Western drama's expanding universe.

Matthew McConaughey has provided an update on the long-discussed "Yellowstone" spin-off project that could potentially feature him. During a recent appearance on The Playlist’s "Discourse" podcast, the 56-year-old actor offered a hopeful, albeit cautious, outlook for fans eager to see him enter the acclaimed Western universe.
"No, I mean, it’s not any more of a thing than it was or probably any less of a thing than it was that did hit the headlines there for a while," McConaughey stated. He elaborated on his interactions with series creator Taylor Sheridan: "Taylor and I have spoken and have continued to have conversations about what [it could be] and if that would be whatever. But nothing’s real yet."
Origins of the Rumors
Speculation about a collaboration between McConaughey and Sheridan first emerged in 2023. At that time, Sheridan was actively working to conclude the flagship "Yellowstone" series and navigate the uncertain return of its lead star, Kevin Costner.
During the hiatus between the first and second halves of the main show's final season, reports intensified that McConaughey and Sheridan were engaged in discussions for a possible spin-off within the franchise.
Creator Taylor Sheridan had previously commented on the idea, telling The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023 that McConaughey "seems like a natural fit" for the universe he created.
Sheridan further explained their discussions: "We had a few conversations over the years and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching 'Yellowstone' and responded to it. He was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And by ‘that’ he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do.’"
The Evolving Yellowstone Universe
The original "Yellowstone" series concluded in December 2024. The finale notably proceeded without Kevin Costner, whose character received an off-screen resolution.
In August 2024, an official spin-off titled "Dutton Ranch" was announced, focusing on fan-favorite characters Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, portrayed by Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly. This new series follows the duo as they depart Montana to establish a new life in Texas.
While "Dutton Ranch" expands the "Yellowstone" narrative, Taylor Sheridan took a step back from the writers' room for its inaugural season, although he maintains his role as an executive producer.
Cole Hauser shared insights into the production of "Dutton Ranch" in an interview with Film Inside NYC in July. He acknowledged the shift in dynamic, stating, "There were challenges, you know? Not having Taylor [Sheridan] there for us to really kind of be able to work with these new writers, these new directors, these people ... everything had changed."
Despite these adjustments, Hauser expressed satisfaction with the outcome. He remarked that he was "proud of what we accomplished" on the series, attributing the success to the entire cast and crew who had to "figure out on our feet how to really perform and tell a story." Hauser concluded on a positive note, adding, "I look forward to doing it again."
