Lee Greenwood, the renowned country music artist behind the enduring anthem "God Bless the USA," expressed profound pride in his American heritage and his upcoming involvement in the nation's 250th anniversary commemorations. He highlighted his journey from a "farm kid from California" to a celebrated musician whose life has been intertwined with his country's story.
From Farm to National Anthem: The Genesis of "God Bless the USA"
Greenwood recalled how music became a central part of his life from a young age, around 10 or 12 years old. It was through extensive touring across the United States that he gained a deeper appreciation for the nation's diverse narratives, stories he felt were often untold. This realization inspired him to compose "God Bless the USA" and "Proud to be an American," songs that have since become synonymous with American patriotism.
As the country approaches its 250th milestone, Greenwood shared his immense honor and flattery at the opportunity to perform his iconic music. He confirmed his presence alongside the President of the United States in Washington, D.C., on multiple occasions for these significant festivities.
Emphasizing Unity Over Political Division
Addressing reports of other artists declining to participate in the anniversary events, Greenwood stressed that the occasion should transcend political affiliations. "In this case, there's no politics here," he explained, asserting that the focus should be solely on "celebrating America, this wonderful place that we have for 250 years of our republic."
The singer affirmed that his performances would not be influenced by partisan considerations, whether Democratic, Republican, or Independent. "We have to celebrate America, and I'm sorry they're not going to perform," he stated, reiterating his commitment. He added, "I will stand with our fantastic president, however, on … July 4th in Washington, D.C."
A Longstanding Relationship and Historical Reflection
Greenwood revealed his consistent support for the President "from the very beginning." He also noted a long-standing friendship between the President and himself and his wife, Kimberly Payne, who he mentioned was associated with the Miss USA pageant for nearly three decades. "I'm just very proud to stand next to the man that I appreciate that runs our country," Greenwood remarked.
When asked about crucial historical lessons for future generations, Greenwood pointed to past periods of national strife, such as the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, and the Vietnam era, to counter the perception of contemporary division. He suggested these historical struggles demonstrate the nation's resilience in defining itself.
"We're the only free country in the world that will take care of everyone else," Greenwood asserted, expressing confidence in the nation's identity. He acknowledged that "as we approach this 250-year anniversary of our country, there'll be more challenges in the future. But God bless this wonderful place."
