Idaho Fisherman Catches Record-Breaking Lake Trout, Recapturing State Title
Idaho angler Dylan Smith has once again claimed the state's catch-and-release record for lake trout, reeling in a massive 43.25-inch specimen from Payette Lake.

An Idaho fisherman has achieved a rare feat, not only setting a new state record but also reclaiming a title he once held. Dylan Smith, an angler from Idaho Falls, recently secured the catch-and-release state record for lake trout, demonstrating exceptional skill and a touch of serendipity.
On May 2, Smith was fishing on Payette Lake near McCall when he hooked a formidable lake trout. Following a challenging encounter, he successfully brought the fish aboard his boat. Upon measuring, the impressive specimen stretched to 43.25 inches, significantly surpassing the previous state record of 42 inches.
What makes Smith's achievement particularly noteworthy is his prior history with this very record. In 2018, he initially established the state benchmark for catch-and-release lake trout with a 41.5-inch catch, also from the waters of Payette Lake. His record stood until another angler managed to land the 42-inch fish, thereby taking the top spot.
Though not explicitly a quest for vengeance, fate intervened. Smith's recent catch not only broke the standing record but also restored his position at the pinnacle of Idaho's angling achievements for this species.
After the Idaho Department of Fish and Game officially recognized his new record, Smith shared his excitement on social media, stating, "The former lake trout record holder has returned! 43.25 is the new length to beat!"
Payette Lake's Thriving Fishery
Payette Lake has emerged as a premier destination for anglers seeking trophy lake trout, a development attributed in part to the dedicated management efforts of the Idaho Fish and Game department. Over several years, biologists have implemented strategies aimed at reducing the population of smaller trout within the lake.
This management approach has yielded multiple benefits, including an improvement in the kokanee salmon population and fostering an environment where the remaining lake trout can grow to larger, healthier sizes.
The success of these conservation initiatives is evident. The fact that one individual has broken the state record twice in the same body of water suggests that Payette Lake continues to harbor exceptionally large fish, potentially even bigger than the current record-holder.
