Veteran Colorado Democrat John Hickenlooper Fends Off Progressive Challenger in Senate Primary
Senator John Hickenlooper secured the Democratic nomination for his second term, overcoming a challenge from state Senator Julie Gonzales and marking a momentary pause in the progressive wave within the party.

A long-serving Democratic senator in Colorado, seeking what he has stated will be his final term, successfully defeated a progressive challenger, indicating a brief interruption in the rapid leftward shift observed within the Democratic Party.
Colorado's Senate Primary Outcome
Senator John Hickenlooper, a Democrat from Colorado and a prominent figure in the state's political landscape for many years, triumphed over state Senator Julie Gonzales for the party's nomination. Gonzales, Hickenlooper's progressive opponent, had advocated for a more assertive approach from Democrats in their opposition to former President Donald Trump.
Hickenlooper, 74, is campaigning for his second term in the Senate and has declared this will be his last electoral bid for the chamber. Gonzales, 43, aimed to accelerate his departure by criticizing his moderate stances and his votes in favor of some of Trump's nominees.
“John Hickenlooper has been in office for over 20 years,” Gonzales stated in her campaign launch. “We are not misled by his so-called ‘commonsense approach,’ because there is no logic in supporting Donald Trump’s nominees.”
Nevertheless, Gonzales' defeat represents a setback for the progressive surge that has characterized Democratic primary elections this cycle, where new challengers advocating for change have often contested established incumbents and party leadership.
Before his time in the Senate, Hickenlooper served two terms as Denver’s mayor and two terms as Colorado’s governor, followed by an unsuccessful presidential campaign. He has remained a consistent presence in Colorado politics, while Gonzales positioned herself as part of a newer political generation.
Broader Progressive Trends
The contest between Hickenlooper and Gonzales occurred just one week after several progressive candidates, supported by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, secured their Democratic nominations. Notably, Darializa Avila Chevalier, a community organizer and socialist endorsed by Mamdani, unseated five-term incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat, a Democrat representing New York.
This Colorado primary was not the only internal party conflict between a moderate incumbent and a progressive challenger in the state. Melat Kiros, a socialist candidate, is also competing against long-serving Representative Diana DeGette in Colorado's 1st Congressional District. Kiros has garnered an endorsement from one of Hickenlooper’s Senate colleagues, Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont.
Looking Ahead to November
Following his primary victory, Senator Hickenlooper is now set to face state Senator Mark Baisley in the general election in November. Baisley, who ran unopposed in the Colorado Republican primary, initially launched a campaign for governor to succeed term-limited Governor Jared Polis but later withdrew from that race to pursue a Senate seat instead.
