A Delta Air Lines aircraft was reportedly struck by a fireworks mortar as it prepared to land at Chicago Midway International Airport on the evening of the Fourth of July, federal aviation authorities confirmed.
Delta Flight 1076, an Airbus A319, completed its descent and landed without incident at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday. The flight crew notified air traffic control that the aircraft had been hit by a fireworks mortar moments before its arrival, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Incident Details and Investigation
The plane, which was carrying 52 passengers and six crew members, did not report any injuries among those on board, Delta stated. A spokesperson for the airline confirmed that, "The flight safely landed and taxied to the gate."
The airline further noted that the flight crew did not issue an emergency declaration, and the landing proceeded normally. Following its arrival at the gate, maintenance personnel conducted a thorough inspection of the aircraft, revealing no damage.
The Federal Aviation Administration has initiated an investigation into the occurrence. Delta Air Lines has pledged its full cooperation with the FAA and all relevant authorities as they conduct their review of the event.
