National Mall Fireworks for 250th Anniversary Expected to Cause Hazardous Air Pollution
Internal government documents project significant air quality degradation and health risks from the upcoming large-scale pyrotechnics display in Washington, D.C.

A grand fireworks display scheduled for President Donald Trump's July Fourth celebration on the National Mall is projected to create hazardous air pollution in the vicinity and “very unhealthy” conditions across central Washington, D.C. These findings are detailed in internal National Park Service documents. The event is set for Saturday night as a central part of the 250th anniversary of American independence.
George Thurston, a professor of medicine and population health at New York University, advised that individuals attending or residing near the pyrotechnic show should take measures to reduce their exposure to the smoke.
“People should use the precautionary principle, which is to minimize exposures,” Thurston stated. “An N95 mask would be a good idea.”
The fireworks spectacle is an integral component of the Salute of America 250 Celebration & Fireworks. According to the official Freedom 250 event page, the display will feature 850,000 shells launched from ten distinct locations, including the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, eight barges on the Potomac River, and West Potomac Park. Organizers have scheduled the fireworks to commence at 10:30 p.m. and continue for approximately 40 minutes.
The White House has promoted this event as a highlight of the nation's anniversary, anticipating that over a million people will gather on the National Mall for President Trump's keynote address, entertainment, and what they describe as “the largest pyrotechnics display in the history of the world.”
Projected Air Quality Concerns
Internal modeling within the reviewed documents forecasted that, under the most probable scenario, the fireworks show would produce between 600 and 1,200 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter around the National Mall. A worst-case projection indicated levels could exceed 2,000 micrograms per cubic meter.
The draft analysis specifically recommended that individuals near the Mall “avoid prolonged exposure.”
PM2.5 refers to fine inhalable particles measuring 2.5 micrometers or less, as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA warns that these particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and potentially enter the bloodstream, representing the most significant health risk among various categories of particulate matter.
Projections for downtown Washington, Arlington, and Capitol Hill indicated “very unhealthy” air quality, with elevated pollution levels expected to persist for three to six hours following the fireworks display. Another Park Service document reportedly advised wearing N95 masks outdoors and remaining indoors as much as possible during and after the event.
Health Advisories and Community Impact
The documents also raised questions regarding the potential impact of the smoke on specific communities. The fireworks are planned for areas near the Potomac River and the National Mall, in close proximity to Southeast Washington, a region characterized by predominantly Black and lower-income neighborhoods.
Professor Thurston highlighted that respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, such as asthma, are more prevalent within lower-income and minority populations.
“I definitely think that should not be ignored,” he remarked.
City Prepares for Large Crowds Amidst Celebrations
Separately, D.C. officials have issued warnings to residents and visitors, urging them to prepare for substantial holiday crowds and several days of extreme heat. Mayor Muriel Bowser's office announced on Monday that hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors are expected for various events, including the Salute to America Celebration and Fireworks, parades, World Cup celebrations, and Washington Nationals games.
The mayor’s office also noted that the National Mall event has been designated a National Special Security Event. Attendees have been advised to arrive early, utilize public transportation, and anticipate that security magnetometers will open at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
