Travelers Face Severe Penalties for Cannabis Abroad, Including Up to 10 Years in Prison

As international travel resumes, American citizens are receiving a crucial reminder to thoroughly inspect their belongings for any items that might trigger severe legal repercussions, including hefty fines or even lengthy prison sentences, when crossing borders.

U.S. authorities are cautioning travelers that transporting cannabis products across international frontiers remains prohibited in numerous nations. This warning follows recent updates to customs regulations in Thailand, which have dramatically increased the penalties for offenders.

Strict Penalties Abroad

In June 2026, Thailand implemented more stringent penalties for individuals apprehended attempting to import cannabis into or export it from the country. According to advisories from the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Thailand, violators could face imprisonment for up to 10 years, a fine reaching 500,000 Thai baht (approximately $15,000 USD), or both.

Despite Thailand's decriminalization of cannabis possession within its borders in 2022, the import or export of cannabis without appropriate permits continues to be illegal, as highlighted in the official warnings.

Understanding International Drug Laws

Jeffrey Hoffman, a cannabis attorney based in New York, emphasized that travelers should never assume that the laws of their home country extend beyond international boundaries.

Hoffman, who is also an advocate for cannabis legalization, referenced the widely publicized case of WNBA athlete Brittney Griner, who was detained in Russia after authorities discovered cannabis oil in her luggage. This incident serves as a stark reminder that some countries rigorously enforce their drug laws.

Travel expert and former flight attendant Bobby Laurie, based in the D.C. area, noted that many travelers erroneously believe that if a substance is legal domestically, it will automatically be legal in any country they visit.

Laurie advises travelers to research local laws thoroughly before each journey and to ensure all backpacks, purses, and carry-on bags are emptied of any forgotten items. He stressed that individuals should never presume that customs officials will overlook an oversight.

Laurie pointed out that some nations have regulations governing common items that many travelers might not anticipate. He cited Singapore's restrictions on chewing gum as an example, underscoring the importance of researching destination-specific rules prior to packing.
