Republican Lawmaker Criticizes WNBA Over Caitlin Clark's 'Thug Treatment' Following Flagrant Foul
A recent flagrant foul against Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark has drawn sharp criticism from a Republican congressman, who labeled the WNBA's handling of the star as "pathetic."

The recent on-court incident involving Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark has ignited significant debate, especially after a particularly aggressive play during a game. This event has prompted a Republican legislator to voice strong disapproval regarding what he perceives as a pattern of unfair physical targeting within the league.
Controversial On-Court Incident
Phoenix Mercury player Alyssa Thomas committed a flagrant foul on Clark. The incident involved Thomas pushing her fist into Clark's neck area, then stepping over her while Clark was on the floor. Initially, officials did not call a foul during live play. However, upon video review, the action was upgraded to a Flagrant 2 foul. This ruling led to Thomas receiving a one-game suspension from the league.
Congressional Criticism of League Conduct
The contentious foul drew immediate condemnation from Representative Tim Burchett, a Republican from Tennessee. Burchett characterized the treatment of Clark in the WNBA as "thug treatment," describing the situation as "pathetic." Speaking to a media outlet, Burchett stated, "I think it's trashy. She gets the crap kicked out of her. The WNBA has an opportunity for women to take it to the next level, and she's being just abused..." He further elaborated on the expected physicality of the sport, asserting, "It is supposed to be a physical game — it's not supposed to be a wrestling match. Take it to the pro wrestling association."
Questions Over Promotional Inclusion
Beyond the on-court physicality, Representative Burchett also raised concerns about Clark's conspicuous absence from a WNBA promotional poster celebrating the league's 30th anniversary. This omission comes despite Clark's demonstrable impact on the league, with her games consistently setting new records for both attendance and television viewership. Burchett commented on the situation, saying, "I think something's up, I think everybody knows what's up. And they're going to lose." He then offered a speculative prediction about Clark's future in professional basketball: "Some European league is going to pull her in, and they'll pay her, and she'll pull out, and they'll all be back flying coach."
Team's Social Media Reaction
Adding to the controversy, the Phoenix Mercury's social media account posted a message that appeared to mock the incident involving Clark. The post featured a cartoon image of a player on the ground, accompanied by the caption, "DE-WANNA PIECE OF THIS?!?" This caption seemed to be a wordplay on the name of DeWanna Bonner, a player currently with the Mercury. Bonner had previously played for the Fever last season. The two teams have reportedly experienced heightened tension throughout their recent matchups.
