An eight-year-old boy tragically passed away after being struck by a falling tree during a summer camp session in Wayland, Massachusetts.
U.S.·

An eight-year-old boy tragically died on Tuesday morning after a tree fell at a YMCA summer camp in Massachusetts. The incident, which occurred at Camp Chickami in Wayland, also resulted in injuries to a camp counselor, according to local authorities.
Emergency services, including fire and police departments, responded to the scene. Officials reported that the child sustained life-threatening injuries, while an adult camp staff member suffered less severe injuries. Fire Chief Neil McPherson explained that a large branch struck the boy when one tree fell, creating a “domino effect” by impacting another tree. The adult victim was reportedly hit by a smaller branch.
Following the initial response, the young boy was transported by medical helicopter to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced deceased due to his injuries.
Camp Closure and Community Grief
In the wake of the tragedy, the West Suburban YMCA announced that Camp Chickami would close for the remainder of the week. Jack Fucci, President and CEO of the West Suburban YMCA, released a statement expressing the organization's sorrow.
"The entire West Suburban YMCA family is grieving the loss of a young camper when a tree fell at Camp Chickami in Wayland on Tuesday," Fucci stated. "We are keeping the camper’s family foremost in our thoughts at this extraordinarily difficult time. We are making grief counseling and other support resources available to camp staff, campers, and their families."
Local Officials Offer Condolences
Wayland municipal leaders also extended their sympathies to those affected by the incident.
Acting Police Chief Mark Hebert conveyed, "I want to offer our sincere thoughts and support to the family and friends who are facing this tragic loss."
Chief McPherson added, "Our Wayland community is grieving today, and thinking of those who lost so much as a result of this tragic accident. I encourage anyone who is experiencing overwhelming grief or anxiety to talk to someone, reach out for help, and to remember that we are the strongest when we stand together as a community."
