Bears Safety Coby Bryant Suffers Knee Injury in Practice, Diagnosis Offers Relief
Key defensive free agent Coby Bryant was carted off the field with a knee injury, but medical evaluations indicate a shorter recovery timeline than initially feared.

Coby Bryant's start with the Chicago Bears has been marred by an early injury, leading to an emotional departure from the practice field. Despite the initial setback, the outlook for Bryant's return appears more positive than initially feared.
Clearly distressed, Bryant was carted off during Monday's practice, clutching his leg and anticipating a severe injury just days into his new chapter with the Bears, following a Super Bowl win with the Seattle Seahawks. The incident occurred during a one-on-one drill against tight end Cole Kmet, where Bryant collapsed and immediately grabbed his knee. Subsequent medical evaluation, however, revealed a less dire prognosis than his initial concerns suggested.
Initial Injury and Diagnosis
The injury is not expected to be season-ending. According to reports, the safety is projected to miss approximately eight to ten weeks, having sustained a hyperextended knee, a bone bruise, and a minor fracture.
Bryant joined the Bears this offseason on a three-year, $40 million contract, a key acquisition intended to fortify a secondary that underwent significant changes due to several player departures. He was anticipated to be a cornerstone of the defense, having established himself as a valuable player during his rookie contract with the Seahawks, where he recorded seven interceptions and contributed to their Super Bowl victory.
While his availability for Week 1 of the regular season, still five weeks away, remains uncertain, the expectation is that his absence will not be prolonged once the season commences.
"It always sucks to see," commented second-year tight end Colston Loveland regarding Bryant's injury. "That’s part of it. You know, he’s tough, he’s a dog. He’s going to be fine."
Impact on Team and Depth Chart
Bryant's temporary absence will challenge the team's defensive backfield depth. First-round draft pick Dillon Thieneman, a standout safety from Oregon, was already slated to start at free safety alongside Bryant. Now, Cam Lewis, who had been playing slot cornerback due to a prior injury to Kyler Gordon, is expected to shift to safety to cover the vacancy.
Lewis is another recent free-agent addition for the Bears, who saw several safeties depart this offseason, including Kevin Byard, Jaquan Brisker, Nahshon Wright, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Jonathan Owens. Lewis previously played six seasons with the Buffalo Bills.
Bryant's Role and Return Outlook
This period of the NFL calendar is often marked by teams hoping to maintain player health, yet the league consistently demonstrates that defensive depth is a critical factor in a team's long-term success, particularly as the postseason approaches. The Bears are experiencing this challenge early in their 2026 NFL season preparations, but the positive news is that they will not be without a significant free-agent acquisition for the entirety of the upcoming campaign.
