Former President Barack Obama recently offered his perspective on the Founding Fathers, characterizing them as “geniuses” who nonetheless harbored a “deep flaw” due to their connection to slavery. These comments were made as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary.
Speaking in an interview on Sunday, Obama stated, “I think sometimes we get confused in thinking that these two stories are separate. They're intertwined, right? Which is why it's possible for me to be a great admirer of George Washington, and also acknowledge he was a slaveholder.”
As many Americans prepare for patriotic events to mark the nation's 250th birthday this coming Saturday, the 44th president has utilized this significant milestone to convey a more measured message concerning the current state of American democracy.
“That does not negate [Washington’s] greatness, it simply acknowledges that there's a profound deep flaw in these Founding Fathers who were also geniuses and gave us these tools,” Obama explained. He added, “It’s that we're this mixed bag, we've got contradictions. And embody the country's contradictions.”
Reflecting on American Ideals and Historical Realities
Obama's recent media appearances coincide with the inauguration of his presidential center in Chicago earlier this month. This extensive facility, which includes a museum, a library branch, and community programs, is envisioned as a lasting legacy project that connects to Obama’s political origins on Chicago’s South Side.
During the center's opening ceremony, an event attended by various former presidents and prominent figures, Obama also addressed the founders' legacy. He noted in his speech, “The success of this experiment was never a given.” Referring to the nation’s formation, he continued, “In forming our union, the founders fell terribly short of the Declaration's promise, leaving slavery intact, allowing states to restrict the franchise to white men who owned property. But in drafting a Constitution and a Bill of rights, they did have the foresight, the genius, to provide us with a framework that allows each generation to make our union more perfect.”
Historical Context and Personal Connections
During Obama’s initial ascent in politics, investigations revealed that some of his white ancestors in the United States had been slave owners. This discovery has periodically re-entered political discussions, notably in 2019 comments made by then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Regarding the then-upcoming president's family background, Bill Burton, who served as Obama’s spokesman in 2007, confirmed to the Associated Press that “While a relative owned slaves, another fought for the Union in the Civil War.”
