Rep. Ocasio-Cortez Draws Scrutiny for Perceived Accent Shift During Memphis Rally Address

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, encountered criticism online last week after delivering remarks at a campaign rally in Memphis, Tennessee. Social media users accused her of adopting a different accent during her speech, prompting comparisons to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Ocasio-Cortez was speaking on Friday in support of Justin Pearson, a progressive candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives who currently serves as a state representative in Tennessee.

"We cannot afford to leave Tennessee behind," she stated. "We cannot afford to leave Kentucky behind, Alabama behind, Mississippi behind, Georgia behind, South Carolina behind. There is no country where we are split apart."

She continued, recalling a recent visit: "About a month or two ago, we were in Montgomery, Alabama — Sister [Rep. Ayanna] Pressley and I were in Montgomery, Alabama, and one of the things that we said was that it is time for the North to roll up to the South."

Online Reactions and Comparisons

This particular segment of her address became a focal point for online critics, who suggested she was using a "fake accent."

Actor Michael Rapaport, who has indicated he plans to run for New York City mayor in 2029, commented on social media, "AOC, from the ‘Bronx’ sounding like a southern Baptist preacher while in Memphis."

Conservative communications strategist Steve Guest also weighed in on social media, asserting, "Hillary Clinton developed an accent. Kamala Harris developed an accent. AOC is developing an accent. It’s all patronizing."

Another social media user claimed, "Rep. AOC just got busted putting on a FAKE ACCENT for a predominantly black audience. She's seriously going full Kamala for 2028," referencing speculation about a potential future presidential campaign for Ocasio-Cortez.

Previous Accusations Against Vice President Harris

Vice President Harris has frequently faced similar accusations of adjusting her accent based on her audience. In 2024, for instance, she drew criticism for what some termed a manufactured Southern accent during a rally in Atlanta in July. She was again criticized for this perceived shift at a Labor Day rally in Detroit later that year. Furthermore, during an international trip to France in 2021, critics alleged Harris adopted a "French accent" while visiting a COVID laboratory.
