Aaron Rodgers Critiques ESPN's Silence on Russini-Vrabel Allegations, Slams Media Standards
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers used his platform on "The Pat McAfee Show" to criticize ESPN's lack of coverage regarding a significant alleged scandal involving a former reporter and an NFL coach, while also taking aim at Dr. Anthony Fauci.

During a recent appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," quarterback Aaron Rodgers delivered a wide-ranging critique that targeted both media practices and a prominent public figure. His comments, which quickly garnered attention across the NFL, specifically called out the network airing the program, ESPN, for its perceived lack of coverage on a significant alleged scandal.
Rodgers Questions Media Silence on Allegations
Rodgers' primary focus regarding ESPN centered on Dianna Russini, a former reporter for the network who later joined The Athletic as an NFL insider. Russini became embroiled in controversy during the offseason due to allegations of an inappropriate relationship with then-New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. Following the unfolding details, Russini resigned from her position at The Athletic, and Vrabel reportedly took time for counseling during the NFL Draft.
Rodgers openly questioned why a story of this magnitude, potentially affecting the NFL, received minimal attention from ESPN compared to other media outlets. He expressed frustration, stating,
"Look at what the network’s doing. You have literally an individual that maybe used to work at ESPN, that covers our league at the highest level, and there’s a major scandal. And it’s just like nobody can f---ing talk about it? Like, what are we doing here?"
When a co-host on the show suggested that personal lives should remain private, Rodgers countered, arguing that if such situations involve potential leaks or tampering, or if the individuals hold influential positions like MVP or Coach of the Year voters, they warrant scrutiny. He referenced a past MVP voting experience, saying, "Remember when I won MVP in 2021, and that bum in Chicago – yeah, that’s real life. How are we allowing these people to have an impact?"
Critiques on Journalistic Standards and Public Figures
The conversation also veered into a broader critique of media integrity. Rodgers, who joked about bringing intensity to the show, began by mocking Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former White House COVID advisor. He stated, "I’ll plead the Fifth," directly referencing Fauci's recent invocation of the Fifth Amendment numerous times during a Senate hearing.
Rodgers' grievances extended to how he felt he was covered during his tenure with the New York Jets. He suggested that Russini, while working for The Athletic, was particularly active in reporting on the perceived turmoil surrounding him and its alleged impact on the franchise. In 2024, The Athletic reported Rodgers intended to play beyond that season but not for the Jets, a claim Rodgers vehemently denied on McAfee's show, calling it "100% false" and criticizing the media.
He lamented a perceived decline in journalistic integrity, stating, "There is not a lot of journalistic integrity anymore, I don’t think." When McAfee interjected with "Standards," Rodgers replied, "The standards are what they are. Listen, some of the stuff that I’ve read I would say the majority is limited in its truth, and questionable in its content. Meaning, I don’t understand why some of the articles written last year, because it seemed like they were really trying to ruin people’s lives."
Rodgers emphasized the tight-knit nature of his inner circle, stating he doesn't believe anyone close to him would leak information or try to discredit others. He commented on the
